Maarten Vandevoordt unsure where he will play next season

In an interview with Knack, Genk’s 20-year-old goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt revealed that he was still unsure where he would be playing football next season. The young keeper said that while Peter Gulacsi has been struggling with an injury, he understands that RB Leipzig want to wait to see the extent of the injury before they decide whether to bring Vandevoordt over to Germany a year earlier.

Vandevoordt said ‘Leipzig has always emphasized that I have to take the step at the right time. Better to play another season in Genk instead of sitting on the bench in Germany’.

There have been rumours circulating that the German title challengers may look to bring the Belgian keeper in a year earlier than planned because of the injury to Gulacsi. However, as the quote above indicates, it is clear that the club is keen to ensure that Vandevoordt does not spend time on the bench and instead gains valuable game experience.

So far this season Vandevoordt has been ever present for Genk, who are currently top of the Belgian Pro League.
