PSV put in a good display during the first leg of their Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund. Despite going down 1-0 to former striker Donyell Malen’s first half strike, the side responded well and created plenty of chances. Malik Tillman’s bursting run into the box earned the side a penalty, although Mats Hummels was adamant that by touching the ball first the VAR should have overturned the decision. Luuk de Jong stepped up to score his fourth goal of the competition, adding to his 19 Eredivisie goals this season.
Peter Bosz’s side were confident going forward and forced Dortmund’s goalkeeper Alexander Meyer into a number of decent saves. The Dutch league leaders will probably feel that they could have gotten more out of the first leg, and will hope that they won’t regret not taking their chances when they travel to Germany for the second leg. They will certainly hope to have as much joy down the wings as they did in the first leg, with their wide men given plenty of opportunities to burst down the flanks and fire crosses in.
PSV will hope to keep the momentum going while they wait for the second leg in Dortmund. Before then, they have clashes with PEC Zwolle, Feyenoord and Go Ahead Eagles domestically. A win against second place Feyenoord could all but guarantee they lift the Eredivisie trophy at the end of the season.
The Dutch side will also hope that the injury to Olivier Boscagli at the end of the game will not be serious enough to keep him out for the second leg.
