Luuk de Jong excited to return to Sevilla for Europa League play-off

Luuk de Jong is excited to return to former club Sevilla for the Europa League clash between the Spanish side and PSV.

PSV will have to contest a play-off to reach the last 16 of the Europa League after finishing second to Arsenal in their group, and have been drawn against Sevilla.

De Jong played for the La Liga side from 2019 to this summer – with one season spent on loan at Barcelona – before returning to the Eredivisie club, and said prior to the draw that he’d like to play against them.

Having gotten his wish, the Dutchman can’t wait for the two-legged tie.

“For me personally, this is a wonderful draw”, said the striker.

“I am looking forward to seeing the people of the club again. Of course I still follow Sevilla. The club is not in the best phase, but that says nothing about the matches we have to play in a few months. February is still far away.

“In any case, it will be two special matches for me. I am very much looking forward to it.”

PSV have looked good in recent weeks, beating Arsenal and Ajax, while Sevilla have won just two of their nine matches under new manager Jorge Sampaoli.

De Jong thinks his current team will have a good chance of prevailing and says the key is to get a good result in the first leg in Spain.

“Of course we have opportunities,” he added.

“We have already won several top matches this season. Against AS Monaco, Feyenoord, Arsenal and yesterday against Ajax you can see what our team is capable of.

“It will be important to manoeuvre ourselves into a good starting position in Seville for the return in the Philips Stadium.”
