Louis van Gaal says free-kick was for Memphis Depay not Wout Weghorst

It was the moment that gave Netherlands hope as they achieved the remarkable comeback against Argentina to send their World cup quarter-final clash to extra-time before Oranje were sent packing after bowing out on penalties. Yet, the free-kick was not meant for Wout Weghorst, NOS reports.

The striker was sent on in the second-half as the Dutch national side were trailing 2-0 against the now-World Cup finalists but the Besiktas striker scored a brace to give his side some hope of keeping their World Cup hopes alive.

However, it has come to light that the free-kick taking by Teun Koopmeiners was meant to be for Memphis Depay not for the striker on loan from Burnley, as departing head coach Louis van Gaal confirmed.

That was the plan [free-kick for Depay],” he said. “He moves perfectly with his back towards the opponent’s goal and had to make a feint to the left and then finish with the right.”
