Louis van Gaal leaves Memphis Depay stunned with Angel Di Maria remark

Louis van Gaal is no stranger to a few quotes during press conferences but his latest comment left Memphis Depay stunned, Voetbal International reports.

The Netherlands boss was speaking to the press ahead of their match with Argentina and the topic of Angel Di Maria was brought – who used to play at Manchester United under the Dutch coach.

But after leaving Old Trafford, Di Maria made it no secret what he thought of life in Manchester and his opinion of Van Gaal in the past.

“Di Maria calling me the worst manager he has ever had? He’s one of the few players with this opinion,” he said at conference.

“Usually it is the other way around. I don’t like that Ángel shouted that. But it is no different. A coach sometimes has to make decisions that are not good.

“I’m really sorry about this and I find it sad he said this. Memphis had to deal with it too in Manchester, and now we kiss each other on the mouth.”

The remark left former United player bursting into laughter and politely rejecting Van Gaal’s gesture of a kiss and despite Di Maria’s remarks from seven years ago in an interview in Argentina, the Oranje boss spoke highly of the Argentine ahead of their quarter-final clash.

“He is just a very good footballer, who at the time of that he played in Manchester had a lot of problems privately. There was a break-in with him. That also affected his form in that year,” he said.
