Leeds United striker remains hopeful for Koeman call-up: “Everyone is looking at the Premier League”

As Voetbal International’s Geert-Jan Jakobs explains, Joël Piroe refuses to give up his dream of playing for the Dutch national team, even though he’s been invited to play for Suriname. The Leeds United striker hopes to catch the eye of national coach Ronald Koeman in the Premier League.

Piroe made his Premier League debut for Leeds United on Monday evening, leading his team to a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton.

The former PSV, Sparta Rotterdam, and Swansea City striker didn’t score, but remains determined to make a name for himself in England’s top flight after a strong season in the Championship. Last season, Piroe played a key role in Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League, scoring 19 goals.

With his arrival in the English top-flight, Piroe sees an opportunity to join the Dutch national team. “I haven’t had any indication yet that they’re keeping an eye on me. But everyone’s looking at the Premier League. If I perform well next season, hopefully I’ll be considered,” Piroe told Voetbal International.

“I want to score at least 15 goals this season. It won’t be easy, but it’s possible. I’ve always scored a lot. It does add a certain amount of pressure, but I like that. I’m used to setting goals from my youth football career. I still keep a notebook with personal goals and areas for improvement.

“I feel a drive to prove myself in the Premier League and want to do everything I can to keep Leeds United in the competition. And for a striker, that means scoring goals. I’m ready for it. Just because I’ve reached the Premier League doesn’t mean we’re going to take it easy. The best is yet to come.”
