KV Mechelen’s Zimbabwean star set to miss between six and nine months

KV Mechelen have been dealt a blow with the news that their Zimbabwean winger Bill Antonio could be set to miss between six and nine months. The 20-year-old has suffered a anterior cruciate ligament tear during the first half of the sides 3-2 win over Cercle Brugge on Saturday afternoon. Antonio recently signed a new deal with the club that will run until 2027.

Antonio, who has been capped once by the Zimbabwean senior side, left Dynamos FC in 2022 to join Jong Mechelen. This season has been a break out campaign for the winger, with three goals in 12 Pro League appearances. Under Besnik Hasi he had become a regular starter.

Following their 3-2 win over Cercle Brugge at the weekend, Mechelen remain in with a chance of finishing in the top six. Their remaining fixtures are against Westerlo and OH Leuven, with the former having not much to play for and the latter needing a few more points to guarantee their survival.
