KV Mechelen leave Dries Wouters at home as Schalke loanee free to seek new club

KV Mechelen have decided to leave Schalke 04 loanee Dries Wouters at home while the rest of the squad travels to Spain for warm weather training. According to Het Nieuwsblad, Wouters failed to impress during his loan period spread over two seasons, with Steven Defour not seeing the defender as part of his plans for the future season.

Wouters joined Malinwa in January 2022, with his loan deal extended in the summer of 2022. The defender’s loan deal was due to expire in the summer of 2023, however it appears that the club are willing to let the player move on as he has struggled to nail down a place in the side. So far this season, Wouters has only managed 5 appearances. The arrival of David Bates and the emergence of Alec Van Horeenbeek means that the 25 year-old slipped down the pecking order at the club.

Defour took over midway through the first half of the season from Danny Buijs, which may have had an impact on the decision to allow Wouters to leave.
