KV Mechelen have confirmed that Fred Vanderbiest will remain as the sides head coach for the new Pro League season. Vanderbiest had taken over in a caretaker capacity after the sacking of Besnik Hasi. The interim head coach had made it clear he wanted to remain and be given the job on a full time basis. Despite an indifferent play-off campaign, the board appear to have been impressed by Vanderbiest and have decided to give him a permanent contract. According to the clubs website, other candidates were spoken to but in the end Vanderbiest was considered to be the best option.
KV Mechelen finished 9th in the league last season. After taking over from Hasi, who has since ended up getting the full time job with Anderlecht, Vanderbiest averaged 1.5 points per game. He was in charge for 12 matches, with four wins, six draws and two defeats. Vanderbiest will certainly have to convince a fanbase that might feel that the appointment lacks any real ambition, given some of the other names linked to the vacancy.
