Andre Krul is a goalkeeper with a long and winding resume that sees over 20 clubs represented. From appearances in the early 2010s with the likes of Telstar, Sparta Rotterdam and AGOVV Apeldoorn, to forays in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Belgium, Japan, Australia, Germany and Gibraltar – the 37-year-old seen it all.
While his status as a player has nearly blurred into that of a modern day adventurer, the latest chapter in the shot-stopper’s storied career has seen him land in Africa as his next destination.
Initially signing for Tanzanian Premier League side Mtibwa Sugar F.C. in January 2024, unfortunately he couldn’t make a domestic appearance as the club failed to register him properly. However, the continental journey continued and he joined Senegalese club AJEL de Rufisque in September. When he makes his first appearance, it means that Africa will be the sixth continent after North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania where Krul has played.
Speaking in admiration of his new surroundings, the goalkeeper gushed about the training background of stray dogs and pelicans, among other things:
“I look around and see those old boats, palm trees and beach bars. Unfortunately, a lot of rubbish too, by the way. (…) Beautiful, isn’t it?”
“(When I was training in the stadium) I suddenly saw a dead chicken lying there. Recently, I was standing under the crossbar on the other side and I even saw two dead chickens lying there. No idea how those animals got there. No one gets a kick out of it here, but imagine that there is a chicken lying behind the goal in the Telstar stadium. Then the world is too small, isn’t it?”
