Kortrijk add Japanese international defender in bid to avoid the drop

Kortrijk have announced the signing of Haruya Fujii on loan with a purchase option. The Japanese international defender has signed on a rental basis until the end of the season. Last season the club had success with another Japanese defender in Tsuyoshi Watanabe, who joined Gent in the summer. The Kerels will be hoping that Fujii can have a similar impact.

It appears to be a coup for the relegation threatened side, with Anderlecht having also been linked to the defender in recent weeks. However, Fujii has decided on Kortrijk as his first European club. The 23-year-old leaves Nagoya Grampus, where he made 110 appearances since making his debut in 2018. He also scored four goals for the J League side.

The defender made his debut for Japan at the start of 2024 in a 5-0 friendly victory over Thailand. However, he has not been included in the final squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, meaning he will be available for Kortrijk when the season resumes later this month.
