KNVB willing to take fines for OneLove armband at World Cup

Whoever is the Netherlands captain will wear the OneLove armband at the World Cup, even if it results in the KNVB being fined, the governing body have said.

Qatar have been widely criticised for a number of human rights issues such as the treatment of migrant workers and LGBTQ people ahead of the World Cup.

Many have called on the teams playing to take a stand for such matters, and a number of them have joined the OneLove campaign started by the Netherlands to support diversity and inclusivity and stand against discrimination.

Eight nations including Oranje will wear the armband at the World Cup, and KNVB secretary general Gijs de Jong says the Dutch will do so even if they’re fined by FIFA for it.

“We go for that statement. And if there is a fine, so be it,” he told NOS.

FIFA have yet to comment on the campaign.
