KNVB make decision to play the remainder of Ajax vs Feyenoord behind closed doors after it was abandoned due to flares being thrown on the pitch

The KNVB have decided that the remainder of Ajax vs Feyenoord will be played behind closed doors on Wednesday the 27th of September at 14:00 pm. Ajax have revealed in a statement that they do not agree with this call. They want the rest of the game rescheduled for early November, as their midweek game against Volendam will have to be moved. Volendam have also disagreed with the decision made by the Dutch Football Association.

Feyenoord were leading Sunday’s match 3-0 when the game was abandoned due to Ajax fans throwing flares onto the pitch. 55 minutes of the 90 had been played when things turned ugly. Afterwards, supporters vandalised the Johan Cruyff Arena, damaging their own stadium and breaking into the main entrance.

In a statement, the KNVP explained ‘After an abandoned match, the professional football competition board determines what happens to the match. The basic principle is that the competition must be as fair as possible and that a match should therefore preferably be decided on the field. The match must then be resumed as soon as possible.’

Ajax’s response: ‘Ajax does not agree to this. Ajax disapproves of the misconduct that led to the discontinuation of De Klassieker. Many football fans were victims of this. Due to national and international matches, the earliest possible time to play Ajax – Feyenoord from Ajax’s point of view is the first week of November. Then a cup round is played in which Ajax and Feyenoord do not participate. FC Volendam does. The competition and cup program is now being adjusted by the KNVB for four clubs due to the completion of an abandoned match. Not only the clubs, but also the supporters are victims of this. Ajax say that they are now considering taking legal action against the KNVB.
