Kevin Denkey closing in on season milestone and Cercle record

Kevin Denkey has been remarkable this season. The 23-year-old Togolese forward has scored an incredible 18 goals in just 23 games, putting him level on goals for a single season with last years top scorer for Cercle Brugge Ayase Ueda. He will have to go some way to beat the clubs legendary forward Josip Weber, who hit 31 back in the early 1990s.

However, in just a handful of years the striker is also closing in on becoming one of the sides top five scorers of all time. Denkey’s 42 goals for the club has him in seventh place, but if he can reach 47 he will jump into third place. Weber, unsurprisingly, leads the club still with an impressive 135 goals in 203 games according to Transfermarkt. With Denkey likely to be sold for a substantial fee in the summer, there is little chance that he will be around long enough to get anywhere close to Weber. Yet it is still a remarkable achievement for a player who only joined the side in the winter of 2021 from Nimes.

Cercle Brugge travel to a struggling Gent side who have not been playing well defensively. This weekend could see Denkey close in on the magic 20 mark, and with time left in the regular season, plus the play-offs, number three on the Cercle list is certainly achievable.
