U-turn in Nijmegen: Kento Shiogai transfer falls through after medical examination

Kento Shiogaiโ€™s transfer to Red Bull Salzburg has fallen through due to a failed medical, NEC announced today. The club seemed set to cash in on the attackerโ€™s impending departure, but now the Nijmegen team are missing out on millions.

According to NEC, the transfer broke down โ€˜in good mutual consultationโ€™ after an injury was detected during Shiogaiโ€™s medical examination. Salzburg ideally wanted to take the Japanese player to the Club World Cup, and because of this, โ€˜the medical staff did not dare to give the transfer the green lightโ€™, NEC indicates.

โ€˜Given the importance of mutual trust and a good basis for a transfer, both parties subsequently jointly decided not to proceed with the transfer at this time.โ€™

The Nijmegen team were reportedly set to receive 4.5 million euros for Shiogai. The striker played 28 official matches for NEC and scored five goals.
