Despite only signing for Anderlecht in the summer, Kasper Schmeichel could well depart the club in the near future. The former Leicester City legend has been linked with a move back to England to join struggling Sheffield United. The 37-year-old is said to be open to the idea, having enjoyed his time in England. His current contract with Anderlecht is just until the summer, with an option of a further year.
While this would certainly disrupt the situation at Anderlecht in the short term, it may well ease some tension that has been building for the past few months. Over the summer, the side signed Maxime Dupé. The 30-year-old ex Toulouse goalkeeper was told he would be the sides number one. That was until Schmeichel became available after he left Nice. The Danish international soon usurped Dupé on the 24th of September and has been first choice ever since.
Initially, it was clear that he was not the same player who had been one of the best keepers in the Premier League during his prime with Leicester. However, in recent weeks, his performances have improved and he has made a handful of saves that have helped Anderlecht to win points.
Yet at the age of 37, if the side can get even a small transfer fee for the veteran Dane then it is something they could explore. Furthermore, it then opens up the possibility of pursuing young Icelandic goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson. There is plenty of competition for the young Elfsborg goalkeeper, but without Schmeichel Anderlecht could offer him first team football. Gent were said to be interested, but have opted for the cheaper option of Daniel Schmidt from Sint-Truiden.
The easy option for Anderlecht would also be to return to their original plan A which was to make Dupé their number one option.
