Karel Geraerts phoned Felice Mazzu after Anderlecht sacking

Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League trip to Malmo, Union coach Karel Geraerts revealed that he run former Union boss Felice Mazzu to offer some encouragement after the latter was relieved of his duties at Anderlecht. As reported by Het Nieuwsblad, Garearts said “I called Felice to give him some encouragement. It’s not a good time, but we all know that’s part of football”.

Geraerts was assistant to Mazzu at Union last season, as the side finished second in the league following their promotion from the second tier of Belgian football. Geraerts was promoted to the head coach position when Mazzu departed for Anderlecht in the summer. Union are currently in fourth position, having not lost domestically for six matches. On Saturday evening they came back from 2-0 down at home to Club Brugge, drawing 2-2 despite only have 10 men for the majority of the match.

In Europe, Union qualified for the next round thanks to a 3-3 draw at home to Braga.
