Karel Geraerts departs Union St Gilloise as new contract talks fall through

Union St Gilloise have announced that head coach Karel Geraerts is departing the club. The club and head coach had been in conversations around a new contract, but the talks fell through and both have decided to mutually end cooperation. Geraerts has spent four years with the club, joining as an assistant before becoming the head coach last summer when Felice Mazzu departed for Anderlecht.

Geraerts continued the success that Mazzu had had with the side during the 2022/2023 season. The side were involved in fight for the title right up until the last 5 minutes of the season, missing out after a late defeat to Club Brugge. Had they held on to beat the defending champions, they would have won the title.

Geraerts will certainly not be shy of offers outside of Belgium. His Union side played exciting football domestically and in European continental football. The side beat Union Berlin in the Europa League before losing out to fellow German side Bayer Leverkusen.
