Jurrien Timber completes Arsenal transfer from Ajax

Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Jurrien Timber from Ajax on a long-term contract. The 22-year-old Netherlands international defender is set to bring his talent and versatility to the Arsenal squad after the Gunners agreed on a deal worth €40 million initially which could rise up to €45 million with add-ons.

During his time at Ajax, Timber established himself as a key member of the team, making 121 senior appearances across various competitions. He played an instrumental role in Ajax’s success, contributing to two league titles and a Dutch Cup victory. Timber’s journey with Ajax began in 2014 when he joined the club’s academy alongside his twin brother, Quinten, who currently plays for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.

In 2018, Timber signed his first professional contract with Ajax, and his dedication and hard work paid off when he made his senior debut in March 2020, helping his team secure a 3-1 win over SC Heerenveen. His impressive performances caught the attention of the national team selectors, and he earned a call-up to the Netherlands squad for UEFA Euro 2020 and the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup. Timber made his senior international debut in June 2021, starting in a friendly match against Scotland, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The acquisition of Jurrien Timber has been met with enthusiasm from Arsenal’s Sporting Director, Edu, who is looking forward to seeing the Dutch international perform at the Emirates Stadium as the club prepare for a season which includes Champions League football for the first time in seven seasons.

He said: “We are very happy to bring Jurrien to Arsenal. He is a player that we have admired for a long time, so it’s a credit to everyone in our team that made this happen.

“Jurrien is a young talented international player, who fits our vision of competing with a young strong squad. I know Jurrien cannot wait to get started and we’re really hoping that he will be a great success here for many years.”

Manager Mikel Arteta also shared his excitement about Timber’s arrival. Arteta praised the defender’s versatility and how well he fits into Arsenal’s system, emphasizing the added quality he brings to the squad. Despite his young age, Timber has already achieved significant milestones in his career, including participating in major international tournaments and winning trophies with Ajax. Arteta looks forward to integrating Timber into the squad and expects him to make a positive impact.

Jurrien Timber will don the number 12 shirt for Arsenal, and the entire club extends a warm welcome to him. However, the completion of the transfer is subject to the necessary regulatory processes.

Arsenal fans eagerly anticipate Timber’s contributions to the team’s defensive line and are excited to witness his growth and development in an Arsenal shirt. With his talent, versatility, and winning mentality, Timber has the potential to become a key figure in Arsenal’s future success.
