Junya Ito set to leave Genk for Stade Reims

Japanese international Junya Ito is set to leave Genk for Stade Reims, the Belgian club have announced.

Ito has been one of the club’s star players for some time, scoring eight goals and getting 16 assists in 39 league matches last season.

Such performances caught the eye of Stade Reims who are looking for attacking reinforcements following the sale of Hugo Ekitike to PSG.

It was reported that the French club for looking to buy the winger for around €10 million, and Genk have now confirmed a deal has been reached between the two sides. Once the player passes his medical, the transfer will be confirmed.

“I would like to thank everyone for the great period at this beautiful club. The staff members, the staff and of course the fantastic supporters,” Ito told the Genk website.

“It was an honour to be able to play here in this beautiful stadium, where I felt at home. And to hear my name chanted.

“I would also like to thank the club explicitly for giving me this opportunity. We have had intense conversations over the past few days, where I felt that people really wanted to keep me here.

“But I decided to take this step and take up the challenge. I’m also looking forward to it. But first, thanks again to the whole of KRC Genk and I wish you all great successes!”
