Ajax announced on Monday that John van ‘t Schip has left the Amsterdam club with immediate effect. Van ‘t Schip took over as interim head coach on October 30 of last year and was given a position in technical management this season. The club has now reported that it “did not turn out as they both expected”.
Technical director Alex Kroes stated in the press release:
“The fact that John stepped in as coach last season under very difficult circumstances helped us enormously. We are very grateful to him for that. Unfortunately, what he was going to do for Ajax this season did not become what we both expected. We were honest about that and we thought it would be better to end the collaboration. We are parting ways on good terms. John is and remains a true Ajax man who is always welcome at the club.”
“It’s a shame that this season didn’t turn out the way we had envisioned it,” says Van ‘t Schip in the same press release. “Last season was basically about my role as head coach. Those were intense months, both sportingly and privately, in which we achieved the goal of securing European football with a fifth place. I want to thank Ajax and I will never forget the fantastic support of the fans. Once an Ajax fan, always an Ajax fan.”
