Jan Vertonghen considering leaving Benfica, English clubs interested

Due to a lack of playing time, Jan Vertonghen is thinking about leaving Benfica, and multiple English clubs are interested in signing him.

Vertonghen was an important player for Benfica last season, playing 46 games, but new manager Roger Schmidt hasn’t started him in any of the club’s first four matches of this campaign.

That has left the Belgian defender considering his future, according to Het Nieuwsblad. With the World Cup around the corner, he’s keen to play as much as possible in the coming months to be ready for it.

As for where he could, the publication haven’t named any clubs but do state that multiple teams from the English Premier League and the Pro League are interested in signing him.

He’s apparently very much open to returning to England, where he enjoyed the best years of his career at Tottenham Hotspur.

A return there is unlikely given his advanced years, with a move to a mid-table English side or a top Belgian side the most probable outcomes.
