Ivan Leko looking forward to โ€™emotionalโ€™ return to Antwerp

Ivan Leko returns to Antwerp on Sunday when Gent face one of his former sides. Ahead of the clash, the head coach was talking about how he will feel about going back to Antwerp. The current Buffaloes head coach said โ€˜Itโ€™s going to be an emotional match for meโ€™, before going on to add that โ€˜I also live close to the stadium. It will feel a bit strange for me on Sunday. Most of my friends are big Antwerp supportersโ€™.

Leko will be hoping for a successful return to his former club this Sunday. During his time in charge of the Great Old he led the side to the Belgian Cup in 2020 before leaving to go to China. After a short time in China with Shanghai Port, Leko returned to European football to take charge of Hadjuk Split. In October 2023 he left the side after less than a year in charge. By January he was back in Belgian football with Standard Liege. At the end of last season Leko was allowed to leave to join Gent.

Unfortunately for Leko, things have not started well with the Buffaloes. The side may have only played five games while many others have played six, but their results see them in the bottom four with just one win from five games. They have drawn two and lost two. Last season Gent beat Antwerp away from home twice, while Antwerp beat Gent the last time they met in Gent 3-0.
