Islam Slimani withdraws from Algeria squad and is set to miss three weeks

As reported by Said Fellak, Anderlecht’s experienced Algerian striker Islam Slimani has had to withdraw from the Algeria squad with an injury. The 34-year-old was called up for the AFCON qualifiers in which Algeria were set to face Niger in back to back games. It is expected that Slimani will miss three weeks with the injury. Algeria have won both of their opening group games, beating both Uganda and Tanzania. Niger are second having picked up two draws.

Slimani joined Anderlecht on deadline day and has been one of their top performers in 2023. The striker, who had only scored once for French side Brest during 2022, has already scored seven goals in 11 matches for the Mauves. This included the winner during the European Conference League knock-out tie with Villareal.

The former Leicester and Sporting striker also scored against OH Leuven on the weekend as Anderlecht won 2-0. The game was overshadowed by an injury suffered by Yari Verschaeren which could see him out for six months.
