Injury to Leicester City midfielder gives Alhassan Yusuf AFCON opportunity

Nigeria have announced that key midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been ruled out of the upcoming AFCON. In place of the Leicester City midfielder, the Super Eagles have called up Alhassan Yusuf of Antwerp instead. The 23-year-old has yet to make an appearance for the Nigerian senior side yet, but now has the chance to try and help the Super Eagles in Cote d’Ivoire.

Since joining Antwerp back in the summer of 2021, Yusuf has impressed immensely. His ability to read the game and recover possession has been key for Antwerp in the past few years, especially during the title winning season of 2022/2023. During the victorious campaign, Yusuf played 27 times for the Great Old. Overall he has made 98 appearances for the side, which would have been more if he had not been injured during last season.

Nigeria will face a group consisting of Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the upcoming tournament. They open up against Equatorial Guinea on the 14th of January.
