Hong the Hero: Gent’s South Korean star sends the Buffaloes top with victory over Club Brugge

Gent’s 24-year-old South Korean midfielder Hyun-Seok Hong was the hero as the Buffaloes beat Club Brugge 2-1 at home. The former LASK midfielder opened the scoring in the 24th minute, with Hans Vanaken equalising for Club Brugge just before half-time. Maxim De Cuyper was once again the provider, picking up his third assist of the season. During the 2022/2023 season when he was playing for Westerlo, the 22-year-old Belgian full-back grabbed himself seven assists.

Almost immediately after the interval Gent retook the lead. Tarik Tissoudali was the provider for Hong’s second goal of the game. In the 64th minute the South Korean was replaced by Noah Fadiga. The 23-year-old Senegalese defender joined on a free after his contract with Brest had been terminated due to a respiratory issue. In the 78th minute he was booked, and just three minutes later he received his second yellow.

Despite being down to 10 men, Gent held on, thanks to some fine goalkeeping from Paul Nardi. With this victory, the Buffaloes move top of the league ahead of Cercle Brugge, who they have a game in hand on.
