High flying NEC Nijmegen could lose Japanese international to Mainz 05

According to Florian Plattenberg, NEC Nijmegen midfielder Kodai Sano is attracting interest from Mainz 05. The Bundesliga side may well turn to the Japanese international if his brother, Kaishu Sano, were to leave the club in January. NEC are currently flying high in the Eredivisie, sitting in fourth with eight wins in 17 games.

Sano moved to the Eredivisie from the J League back in 2023. The Japanese international has played 77 games for the club, scoring 10 goals. He has been a key player for the side in recent years and will certainly be a miss if he does leave to join the Bundesliga side.

Mainz 05 could certainly do with the help. The club had a fantastic season last year, making it into the Europa League. However, Mainz 05 are now sat bottom of the table with just one win from their 15 games. With just eight points, Mainz 05 are six points adrift of safety.
