Hein Vanhaezebrouck explains why former Tottenham and Lille target remains on the bench

Hein Vanhaezebrouck was asked in a recent press conference the reason why Gift Orban has had to settle for a spot on the bench in recent matches. The former Tottenham and Lille target exploded onto the scene at the beginning of the year as he scored 15 league goals in 16 games for Gent, as well as five in the Conference League.

However, as reported by HLN, Vanhaezebrouck explained that he always takes training levels into account when picking his team. The experienced head coach revealed that Orban has been struggling to score in training, and while he remains confident, it is starting to impact his play.

In the league, Orban has only scored twice in seven matches, not quite the same goals to game ration as he was managing last season. He did score a hat-trick in qualification for the Conference League against Pogon Szczecin, as well as one against Zilina. Gent will hope that he can rediscover the scoring touch, but it has not disrupted their league progress so far. They are second in the Pro League, level on points with leaders Union St Gilloise. Last seasons top scorer Hugo Cuypers leads the side with three league goals.
