Hein Vanhaezebrouck believes Hyun-seok Hong deserves South Korean world cup spot

Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck was full of praise for his South Korean midfielder Hyun-seok Hong after his two goals in the 4-0 victory over Eupen at the weekend. The manager believes that Hong is deserving of a call up, even if the player himself believes there are more talented players for the national team.

As reported by HLN, the experienced Belgian coach said “Hong says they have so many good footballers in South Korea that he doesn’t stand a chance. But if I see him in front of us, I don’t know why he doesn’t have a chance at a World Cup selection”.

Vanhaezebrouck was asked about comparing one of the goals to that of PSG superstar Lionel Messi, “Like Lionel Messi? I’m not going to compare him with it now, but it had something to it”.

The former LASK Linz midfielder joined Gent in the summer of 2022, and has since played eight games in the Pro League, scoring four and providing two assists.

Gent face Djurgarden in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, in a tie that teammate Laurent Depoitre believes Gent can win.
