Mats Egbring signs in Friesland: Heerenveen benefit from Vitesse exodus

Heerenveen have unveiled Mats Egbring as their latest signing. The 18-year-old right-back joins from Vitesse, who he left on a free transfer due to the situation in Arnhem. Egbring has signed a three-year contract.

As VIโ€™s Bart Kruijt explains, the arrival of Egbring solves a major headache for Heerenveen. Following the departures of Hussein Ali and Denzell Hall, the Frisian side were still searching for a new right-back, but that proved challenging, given Oliver Braudeโ€™s continued involvement. Heerenveen, therefore, sought a talented young right-back who would ultimately be Braudeโ€™s natural successor.

Heerenveen has now found that in Egbring. He comes in on a free transfer, with Heerenveen becoming the latest of a few clubs to benefit from Vitesse losing their professional license. The Arnhem side have already lost Irakli Yegoian to Excelsior, Jim Koller to PSV, and Tim van der Leij to RKC Waalwijk this reason.

Egbring progressed through Vitesseโ€™s youth academy and made his Eredivisie debut at the age of 16. Last season, he played 31 matches in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, providing four assists.

After signing a new right-back, Heerenveen are now looking for a winger. Because Egbring was brought in on a free transfer, thereโ€™s still money available. The cash pot was slightly lightened on Monday with the signing of Ringo Meerveld, who came in as a replacement for the injured Levi Smans.
