Heavy punishment requested for former Leeds United and MK Dons striker after red card against OH Leuven

It looks like, having just returned from a long injury, Gent striker Max Dean could be set to miss a handful of games. This time, disciplinary reasons rather than injury reasons will be keeping the striker out of action. As reported by HLN, the Federal Prosecutor in Belgium is demanding a six game ban for the striker, with a minimum of four being carried out.

This comes after the strikerโ€™s poor tackle of OH Leuven forward Mathieu Maertens late on in Gentโ€™s 4-0 defeat at the weekend. Dean, clearly frustrated after missing a penalty a few minutes early, scythed down his opponent from behind with no chance of winning the ball. Dean looked shocked to be shown a red card and was then confronted by a number of furious OH Leuven players. Maertens himself has been the subject of a number of injuries in recent seasons and there was clearly some of that on the minds of his teammates after the tackle. Dean responded in kind as things looked set to escalate before his Gent teammates separated him from the melee to march down the tunnel.

Gent can appeal, but given the context is is unlikely they will be successful. It certainly is a blow for Gent as Dean has been a good signing when he has been fit, even if he missed a penalty during the heavy defeat to OH Leuven.

Dean joined Gent from MK Dons back in 2024 after 19 goals in 34 games for the English side. During his first season with Gent he scored 13 goals in 30 games before suffering an injury. Dean was also part of the Leeds United academy before moving to MK Dons. Dean never made an appearance for Leeds Unitedโ€™s senior side, spending his career in Yorkshire with their academy sides.
