Halil Akbunar departs Westerlo for Turkish second tier for family reasons

Westerlo have announced that Halil Akbunar has returned to Turkey to join second tier side Eris, who are currently top. Akbunar only signed for Westerlo in the summer and has been one of their top performers this season, however the club has announced that the winger has decided to return for family reasons. The winger scored three times and provided four assists in 13 matches for the newly promoted side.

Akbunar has signed a three and a half year deal with the Turkish side. In the summer, Akbunar left Goztepe to join Westerlo. The club have a strong relationship with Turkey given their Turkish ownership.

It has come as somewhat of a surprise that Akbunar has ended up in the second tier of Turksih football when prior to the winter transfer window it was reported that Galatasaray were interested in the winger.

After their 1-0 away win over Cercle Brugge at the weekend, Westerlo are currently 7th in the league table and only four points off the top four.
