Go Ahead Eagles defender Gerrit Nauber signs contract extension with Eredivisie club

Go Ahead Eagles defender Gerrit Nauber has committed his future with the Eredivisie  The German defender has signed a new contract with the club and will enter his third year, Voetbal International reports.

The 31-year-old centre-back came over from SV Sandhausen in the summer of 2021. At Go Ahead he quickly turned out to be a strong holder and a fan-favourite for the Eredivisie side, although this season has been disappointing with injuries.

However, despite the setbacks on the sidelines, he has signed for another year in the city of Deventer which is decision that has delighted the club too.

“We are happy that we have been able to extend Gerrit’s contract for another year. Despite the fact that he had a difficult season due to injuries, Gerrit is still a valuable player for us. Because of his experience and how he feels what a match demands, he is an important player for us,” says technical manager Paul Bosvelt via the Go Ahead channels.

There was interest in France and a possible return to Germany was on the cards for Nauber but he chose to stay in the Netherlands citing his love for the club and the fans.

He said: “I’m having a great time here too. It’s the club, it’s the people. But also the sporting results. How many times do you think I lost to Ajax? Zero times!”

“Played three times, not lost. The best was last season. They had just won at Borussia Dortmund. Four days later we drew. You understand that such a story does particularly well on birthdays. Especially in my family, where there are a lot of Dortmund fans. What I mean to say: this is a special club. To understand that you only have to look around you.”

Nauber started his career with Bayer Leverkusen’s reserve side before moving to Regionalliga West side Sportfreunde Lotte where he played for five years making over 150 appearances before spells with MSV Duisburg and SV Sandhausen in Germany.
