Gift Orban: I don’t know what the VAR does in Belgium

After their 2-0 loss to Club Brugge, Gent’s Nigerian striker Gift Orban was left bewildered by the decision of the referee and the VAR not to punish Tajon Buchanan for a clear elbow to the face. 20-year-old Orban was chasing the ball when Buchanan stepped across him to see it out of play for a goal kick. As he was doing so, the Canadian international appeared to elbow Orban in the face.

Orban went on to say ‘I don’t know what the VAR does in Belgium…if you see that, as a referee you should contact your assistant and ask: ‘What happened here?’. Instead he was yelling at me’.

Gent’s defeat was a blow to their aspirations of finishing in the top four this season. The three points for the defending champions means the gap has increased between them to four points. It also means that Westerlo and Standard are now level with Gent on 42 points and are also breathing down the necks of Club Brugge.

For Club Brugge they still remain 20 points behind the leaders Genk.
