Ghana could turn to former OH Leuven head coach for the 2026 World Cup

Ghana made a drastic decision this week to sack head coach Otto Addo ahead of the 2026 World Cup. After two friendly defeats, one a humiliating 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Austria, Addo was dismissed by the Ghanaian FA. HLN are reporting that one of the men in line to replace him is former OH Leuven head coach Marc Brys.

Since leaving Belgian football, Brys has certainly had an interesting, if not stressful, time of it. The experienced head coach was appointed as head coach of Cameroon, only for this to then lead to a lengthy battle between the Cameroonian FA and the countryโ€™s Sports Ministry for control over the national team. Head of the FA, former Cameroonian international Samuel Etoโ€™o, had not been in favour of Brys as head coach. In the end, Brys had been able to carry out his duties up until the most recent AFCON. Etoโ€™o eventually won the battle, and Brys did not lead the team into the tournament, with David Pagou in charge. However, Brys is technically still employed by Cameroon, even if he is not actually acting as the sideโ€™s head coach.

Etoโ€™oo and Brys may well cross paths again at the World Cup. Brys would surely welcome the chance to leave Cameroon and take over at the Black Stars ahead of the World Cup. Ghana failed to qualify for the most recent AFCON, so if Brys can bring back some positivity to the side, he may well be given the chance to rebuild a nation with a proud history at the continental and international levels.

Ghana are set to face England, Croatia and Panama in their World Cup group.
