Gent’s strikers fire blanks as wasted chances give Maccabi Haifa first leg lead

Gent will return to Belgium 1-0 down in their Europa Conference League Round of 32 clash with Israeli side Maccabi Haifa. Gent finished the game with an xG of 1.76, with 20 shots in total. However, only three of them were on target with the Israeli side putting in a number of blocks to deny the Buffaloes a goal.

The sides new record signing Momodou Sonko started, but was limited to just 45 minutes of action as he is integrated into the side. He was replaced by the experienced former Huddersfield Town striker Laurent Depoitre at half-time, but unfortunately he was unable to find a way passed the ‘home’ sides defence.

Gent now remain winless since the turn of the year and face struggling Eupen at the weekend. If the side want to have a chance of playing European football next season they will need to turn their season around quickly. Their clash with Maccabi Haifa next week will be played without fans amid security fears.
