Gent’s Nurio Fortuna set to make AFCON debut for Angola in January

Angola have announced their 23-man-squad for the upcoming AFCON in January 2024. Gent’s Nurio Fortuna was included in the final selection, meaning he will have a chance to make his AFCON debut next month. The 28-year-old defender has won ten caps for the side but has yet to feature at an AFCON. Fortuna has made 15 appearances for Gent this season in all competitions.

Angola have been drawn in a group alongside Algeria, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. This means there will certainly be a few familiar faces for Fortuna when he lines up against the other three teams. Algeria are more than likely going to include Union St Gilloise star forward Mohamed Amoura in their line up. The striker has already scored 12 goals in just 13 league games this season.

Charleroi’s Herve Koffi will likely be the number one choice in goal for Burkina Faso, while Mauritania recently called up Sint-Truiden forward Aboubakary Koita for his full international debut. The Canaries forward is leading the team with 11 goals in 18 games, by far and away the best season of the 25-year-old’s career.

Angola will face the trickiest of their opponents first as they take on Algeria on the 15th of January. They will hope to match their performance of 2010 when they hosted the tournament and made it to the quarter-finals.
