Gent’s emerging teenage defender could be set to reject Buffaloes and join Barcelona

Sacha Tavolieri is reporting that Jorthy Mokio’s entourage are looking to get the young defender disaffiliated from Gent. The 16-year-old defender is considered one of the hottest emerging talents in Belgian football and Gent have been in conversations with player and his representatives to sign Mokio to a professional contract. The teenager has made two senior appearances for the side this season.

However, talks have been slow. Head coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck recently said that, in his mind, he had spoken to the player on an individual basis and convinced him to remain with Gent. However, the head coach is not involved in the negotiations which are happening above him. As they drag out longer, many are thinking that it is becoming increasingly unlikely that Mokio will still be with the club in the near future.

Tavolieri has also revealed that Mokio and family were in attendance for the Barcelona v PSG Champions League clash last week. Barcelona are considered to be a potential landing place for the young defender, and it would be hard to see him turning down an advance from the Catalan club.
