Gent to beat Standard Liege to Pieter Gerkens signing

Voetbalkrant are reporting that Gent are set to beat Standard Liege to the signing of Pieter Gerkens. The 28-year-old central midfielder, who currently plays for Antwerp, is out of contract in the summer and so will be available for free. Gent will be the midfielders fifth Pro League club, having previously had spells with Genk, Sint-Truiden and Anderlecht before joining Antwerp in the summer of 2020.

Gerkens began most of the early season games for Antwerp prior to getting injured. Of the 19 games he has played this season, 16 of them were starts. However, his injury allowed for the emergence of Arthur Vermeeren, who alongside Mandela Keita and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp have usurped Gerkens as a starter. He has scored once and provided two assists this season for Antwerp. Overall, he has played 105 games for the club, scoring 10 goals. Missing out on Gerkens is another blow for Standard this week, who saw head coach Ronny Deila depart for Club Brugge.

Gerkens may well leave Antwerp as a league winner. The side face Union this weekend in a game that could ultimately decide where the league trophy ends up this season. Antwerp are pursing a historic double, having beaten Mechelen in the cup final in April.
