Gent sign Moroccan international Ismaël Kandouss from Union St Gilloise

Gent have announced the signing of Ismaël Kandouss from Union St Gilloise on a contract that will last until 2027. The 25-year-old central defender is reported to have cost the club €3m. Kandouss, who has been capped once by the Moroccan national team, joined Union St Gilloise back in the summer of 2019 for just €100k from USL Dunkerque.

The tall central defender only made 17 appearances for the French side before he moved across the border to the Belgian capital. Since joining Union, Kandouss has made 145 appearances for the side as they have gone from the second tier of Belgian football to challenging for the Pro League over the last two seasons.

For Gent, they have been searching for defensive reinforcements since Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui departed for China. They have now added Kandous to the earlier summer signing of Tsuyoshi Watanabe from Kortrijk. Alongside Joseph Okumu and Jordan Torunarigha, Gent have a strong looking central defensive core on paper.
