Gent release Gambian international Sulayman Marreh

Gent have announced that Gambian international midfielder Sulayman Marreh has not had his contract renewed and will be leaving the club. The 27-year-old former Watford and Granada midfielder joined the club in the winter of 2020 from Eupen, having joined the Pandas from Watford in the summer of 2018. Marreh made 10 league appearances this season and scored one goal. Returning to Eupen could well be an option for Marreh.

As a more defensive minded player, the goal he scored during the 2022/2023 season was the only one he managed during his time with the Buffaloes. In total, Marreh made 46 appearances for the side.

The midfielder was part of the first Gambian side to play at an African Cup of Nations in 2022. During the tournament, Marreh played four times as the side reached the knockout rounds. Overall, he has played 33 times for the country and scored once. With another tournament on the horizon, the midfielder will be looking to secure first team football as soon as possible so that he can try and make the squad, should Gambia qualify. They are currently second in their group and just need a point from their final group game against the Congo to book their ticket to the tournament in the Cote d’Ivoire.
