Gent opt for Japanese international goalkeeper as Stade Reims show interest in Hakon Valdimarsson

Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Sint-Truiden’s Japanese international goalkeeper Daniel Schmidt is set to sign for Gent. While the club are still pursuing Icelandic international Hakon Validmarsson, they have opted to sign Schmidt sooner to provide cover for the injured Paul Nardi.

Sint-Truiden have been looking for an option to get the 31-year-old Schmidt’s wages off their books, with Zion Suzuki having been made the sides number one earlier in the season. Schmidt, who has been capped by the Japanese international 14 times, joined the Canaries back in the summer of 2019 from Roasso Kumamoto. Since then, he has made 114 appearances for the side as the teams number one option in goal. Over the summer, Metz had been interested in Schmidt but the transfer did not materialise.

According to the report, Sint-Truiden are not looking for a transfer fee for the goalkeeper as they want to reduce their wage bill as soon as possible. It has also emerged that French side Stade Reims are showing interest in Hakon Valdimarsson, with the 22-year-old open to the move to France.
