Gent closing in on highly rated Icelandic international goalkeeper

Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Gent are in discussions with Swedish side Elfsborg to sign goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson. The 22-year-old is a full Iceland international, having won five caps so far. The young goalkeeper kept an impressive 14 clean sheets in 29 league games, conceding just 22 goals as the side narrowly missed out on winning the Allsvenskan in 2023.

Gent are not the only Belgian side that have shown interest in the goalkeeper in recent months. Anderlecht have also been keeping tabs on Valdimarsson as they look for a long term replacement for the experienced Kasper Schmeichal. However, after a horror injury to Paul Nardi, Gent have been going all out to find a replacement. Although Davy Roef has played well, there appears to be question marks over his ability to be the number one for the Buffaloes. According to the report, the side are looking to sign the 22-year-old for between €1-2m, with bonuses set to be included.

The move would also see Valdimarsson link up with the man who gave him his international debut. Gent’s second team, known as Jong Gent, is currently managed by Arnar Vidarsson. The former Icelandic head coach was in charge of the national team for three years before joining the Gent set up in July of this year.
