Genk unlikely to exercise purchase option for Mbwana Samatta

According to Turkish football journalist Ekrem Konur, Genk are not considering exercising their purchase option for 30 year-old Tanzanian striker Mbwana Samatta. The former Aston Villa striker is currently in his second spell with the club, having previously been a member of the 2018-2019 title winning side. Samatta scored 23 goals that season, coming second in the golden boot competition.

Since leaving Aston Villa, Samatta joined Turkish giants Fenerbahçe after a successful loan spell. However, he has spent the previous two seasons on loan in Belgium. During the 2021/2022 season he was with Antwerp, where he scored 9 goals in 39 matches. This season with Genk, the Tanzanian striker has managed just one goal in 15 appearances. Samatta has had to play back-up to inform Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu.

Samatta began his career with African Lyon, before joining Tanzanian giants Simba. The striker then went on to join TP Mazembe in the DR Congo, one of Africa’s most successful teams. After impressing with TP Mazembe, he joined Genk in January of 2016. His current deal in Turkey does not expire until 2024.
