Genk suffer injury blow amidst title challenge

Genk, who only made the play-offs on the final day of the season, are now very much in the title race after victory over Anderlecht this weekend. However, they now know that they will not see captain Bryan Heynen return to the side this season. After suffering an injury during the final game of the regular season against Westerlo, the midfielder had had to undergo surgery on his abdominal muscles.

While Genk have been playing well without their captain, Heynen will certainly be missed as things get into the business end of the play-offs. He has, for many years now, been one of the best central midfielders in the Belgian top flight. The 27-year-old has played 35 games in all competitions for Genk this season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. The academy graduate has spent his entire career with the side and is closing in on 300 appearances for the club. He has scored 35 goals and provided 31 assists since making his senior debut during the 2015/2016 season, with 294 games played.
