From promising young star to no longer required: Giorgi Chakvetadze joins Watford from Gent

Watford have announced the signing of Gent’s Giorgi Chakvetadze on loan for the 2023/2024 season. The 23-year-old versatile attacking midfielder also has a purchase option included in the deal. Once highly touted to be a future star, Chakvetadze’s six year spell with Gent looks set to come to an end.

In the summer of 2017 Gent signed the promising teenager from Dinamo Tbilisi, where he had scored five goals in 31 games in a breakout season. In five years with the Buffaloes, injuries curtailed his chances to impress as he managed just 81 games, scoring eight goals. the 2018/2019 was his best season for the side, as he started 19 games, scoring four and providing two assists.

For the back end of the 2021/2022 season he was loaned to Hamburg where he made 12 appearances, scoring once. It was clear last season that the side didn’t see a future for the young Georgian at the club, as he moved to Slovakia to play for Slovan Bratislava on another loan deal. He made 47 appearances for the side, scoring once and providing four assists.

For the Georgian notional team, Chakvetadze has scored seven goals in 16 games.

Hopefully, the move to Watford and the EFL Championship will see Chakvetadze regain his early promise, as at 23-years-old he still has plenty of time to become the player he was once touted to become.
