Fortuna Sittard appoint former KV Mechelen manager Danny Buijs as head coach

Fortuna Sittard have appointed Danny Buijs as the clubs head coach. The 40-year-old has signed a two-year deal at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion. Buijs succeeds Julio Velázquez as head coach. The Spanish manager left Fortuna following their decision not to extend his contract.

Danny Buijs has previously managed KV Mechelen in Belgium and FC Groningen. Fortuna Sittard will be the third professional club he’s managed. Speaking about the new job, Buijs told the club website ‘I am really looking forward to starting this job, I have had some very nice conversations. I have a good feeling about that.’

Fortuna Sittard had a relatively good season last campaign. The club finished in 13th place. Buijs believes that the Fortuna fans will be the key to the clubs success next season. The Dutchman said ‘We must – together – do everything we can every day to represent this club in a good way. That must be the norm. The relationship with the supporters is essential in this. I remember that in Sittard It was always difficult to play football, especially when the public got behind it. We have to realize that again next season.’
