Former Tottenham and Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld wins Golden Shoe after delivering Antwerp’s first title since 1957

Last night Toby Alderweireld was confirmed as the winner of the prestigious Golden Shoe award. The award is given to the best player in the Belgian Pro League over the previous calendar year. During the 2022/2023 season, Alderweireld led Antwerp to their first title since 1957, scoring a crucial goal in the dying minutes of the season to confirm the trophy.

The 34-year-old joined Antwerp last summer from Al-Duhail SC in Qatar, immediately being named as captain of the side under Mark van Bommel. With the former Tottenham and Southampton defender at the back, Antwerp had one of the best defences in the league. Despite advancing in years, the former Belgian international played 36 times, scoring seven goals and providing two assists. The goal away to Genk will go down as one of the greatest moment’s in his and Antwerp’s history.

After the Qatar World Cup, Alderweireld announced his retirement from international football. He played 127 times for the Red Devils in a number of World Cups and European championships, scoring five goals.
