Former QPR midfielder Tjaronn Chery trains with FC Groningen following the suspension of football in Israel

FC Groningen have announced that Tjaronn Chery is temporarily training with the club to maintain his fitness. The 35-year-old midfielder is currently under contract with Israeli side Maccabi Hafi, but due to the conflict in the country, the league has been suspended.

Chery played 80 times for Groningen between 2013 and 2015. The Suriname international helped the club lift the KNVB Cup during his final season. Two seasons with Queens Park Rangers followed, where he scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 61 Championship appearances. Chery experienced spells in China and Turkey, before landing a move to his current club Maccabi Haifa.

All football has been halted in Israel due to the country’s current situation. Now, Tjaronn Chery is back with his former club, FC Groningen, maintaining his fitness. Dutch-Congolese winger Jordan Botaka also fled Israel this month. The 30-year-old had played just two matches with his new club, FC Ashdod, before he was forced to leave.
