Former Fortuna Düsseldorf and Schalke 04 striker Benito Raman surpasses career best season with time to spare

It’s safe to say that, so far this season, Benito Raman has been one of the signings of the season. KV Mechelen’s search for a striker led them to the former Fortuna Düsseldorf and Schalke 04 man and he has duly delivered. His goal at the weekend against Union St Gilloise not only helped the side to a vital three points, it also was a landmark moment for him. The Belgian forward, with 13 goals in 23 games, has hit career best figures with time to spare. His previous best was with Anderlecht during the 2021/2022 season, but that season it took him 44 games to score 12. His goal at the weekend also marked his 50th in the Pro League.

Mechelen, while having a poor second half of the season, will be glad that they were able to pick up the 30-year-old in the summer. Raman has scored five goals in his last four games, crucial considering that the side have gone from top six contenders to trying to avoid the bottom four and the play-downs. With four games to go in the regular season, Raman should be aiming to finish on at least 15 goals. If the side make the second play offs, which they should, he will have a further handful of games to potentially reach 20 for the season. That would be quite an achievement.

Mechelen have a decent chance of avoiding the bottom four during their remaining fixtures. All four sides they face are in and around them. First up they welcome St Truiden before games against Beerschot, Charleroi and finally Dender.
